Staples Infographics

The Staples Print & Marketing Department lacked clear, accessible resources to help customers and employees quickly understand service pricing and workflows. I developed a series of infographics and reference tools to improve visual communication, reduce repetitive questions, and streamline transactions.

Context:

  • Customers often didn’t know service prices or ordering steps until late in the process, causing confusion and delays.

  • Existing materials were plain text and disconnected from how services were actually presented in-store.

  • Employees spent excessive time explaining the same processes, taking away from other tasks.

My Role and Responsibilities:

  • Sole designer, from concept to final production.

  • Created multiple pricing charts and instructional handouts for different services.

  • Balanced brand alignment with practical usability — prioritizing clarity without sacrificing Staples’ visual identity.

Process:

  1. Observation & Feedback – Identified high-confusion areas: self-serve printer pricing, poster print pricing, and self-serve email submission steps.

  2. Design Planning – Determined the best mix of color-coding, layout, and iconography to make information both quick to scan and easy to understand.

  3. Execution – Created three main deliverables:

Self-Serve Printer Pricing Chart

  • Matched chart colors to the printer interface: Copy (blue), Scan (orange), Print (purple), Fax (turquoise).

  • Organized by paper size, single/double-sided options, and color/B&W output.

  • Added scanning and fax prices at the bottom, also color-coded to match interface.

  • Printed on a compact 5x7 card placed beside the touchscreen for immediate visibility.

Poster Print Pricing Sheet

  • Simple matrix layout showing poster sizes as rows (12x18, 18x24, 24x36) and paper/lamination types as columns.

  • Size rows color-coded to match the in-store sample board (purple, white, yellow) for easy cross-reference.

  • Columns in red to align with Staples branding.

  • Allowed customers to quickly match the sample they saw to the pricing they needed.

  • Size in green to indicate that the 36x48 is an online only option

Self-Serve Printing Instruction Card

  • Double-sided business card with:

  • Front – Email address for file submission, 3-step guide, screenshots of printer interface with highlighted buttons.

  • Back – Space for writing retrieval code, online ordering website, and note about not using the self-serve email for orders.

  • Designed for maximum clarity, even if it meant sacrificing some visual elegance.

  • Used Staples’ red, black, and white scheme, but left interface screenshots in original colors for accuracy.

Outcome

  • Significantly reduced repetitive staff explanations for both pricing and self-serve usage.

  • Helped customers make informed decisions and navigate services independently.

  • Improved alignment between in-store signage, product samples, and digital interfaces.
