MonoDuo Series
The Monoduo Series is a self-initiated illustration project that began as an experiment with gold and burgundy markers on black canvas. What started as casual doodles grew into a full series, with each piece built around a strong central subject and intricate surrounding patterns. The project reflects a shift from digital art to tactile, physical mediums while showcasing the power of limited palettes.
Context:
-
Started as an experiment with black canvases and metallic markers.
-
Inspired by curiosity about how reflective gold would interact with flat backgrounds.
-
Grew into a series focused on subjects + surrounding doodle patterns.
-
Explores both personal themes (e.g., “Music of the Rose”) and pop culture (e.g., a Poké Ball surrounded by elemental motifs).
Approach
-
Sole illustrator and concept developer.
-
Experimented with acrylic markers on black canvas.
-
Defined a repeatable format: one central subject, two colors, surrounding patterns.
-
Explored how color restrictions drive creativity and visual consistency.
Process:
-
Experimented with doodles and small tests on black canvas.
-
Identified a structure: central figure + surrounding motifs.
-
Developed larger, more defined works that combined illustration with symbolic patterning.
-
Expanded the series with unique themes (nature, music, pop culture).
MeDIUMS AND
-
Converted each illustration into digital vector and raster formats for easier distribution and reproduction.
-
Adapted central subjects into standalone digital assets, making them suitable for use as stickers, apparel graphics, or print products.
-
Expanded the series from physical fine art into a flexible library of illustrations ready for both artistic and commercial use.
Outcome
-
Created a cohesive series that balances spontaneity with structure.
-
Showcases illustrative skill, color restraint, and adaptability of style.
-
Physical pieces highlight contrast between reflective/flat textures.
-
Positioned as a portfolio feature piece (cover artwork = Music of the Rose).
